This is from “The Conversion of St Wilfrid” in Rewards and Fairies. Wilfrid, the Christian Bishop of Sussex, and Meon, the pagan king of those parts, have been wrecked, out fishing, and nearly perished. When they were near death, Wilfrid had urged Meon to stand by his father’s gods. Meon was so impressed by Wilfrid’s moral stature that he and his people turned Christian. |
