‘…Weland gave the Sword ! The Sword gave the Treasure, and the Treasure gave the Law. It’s as natural as an oak growing.’ |
This is from “The Treasure and the Law” in Puck of Pook’s Hill. Kadmiel, a wise Jew of the thirteenth century, has described how he threw a great treasure into the sea to keep it from the hands of King John, so that he would be forced to give in to the barons over Magna Carta. The treasure had been won two hundred years before by brave knights adventuring to Africa, and wielding a sword forged by Weland Smith. |
