This is from “The Battle of Rupert Square” which the background notes have the first publication as being in the St. James’s Gazette for 28 December 1889 – unsigned – and reprinted in the London Evening Standard of 29 March 1948. It is the opening and last sentence of a bizarre incident on the streets of London – and where I discovered that parts of London used to have wooden pavements. |
