Publication
The first publication of this poem was in Limits and Renewals (1932), following “The Woman in His Life”. It was collected in the Sussex Edition Volume 11 page 69, and volume 34 page 403.
It is reminiscent of Kipling’s verse “The Power of the Dog”, where he warns of the heart-break lying in wait for people who love their dogs, only to find that they have a relatively short lifespan compared to themselves.
