Because I sought it far from men

(notes by Sharad Keskar and Philip Holberton)

These two four line verses are the heading to Chapter XIV of “The Naulahka”. They are collected as a Chapter Heading in Songs from Books (1912) and later collections.

The poem

‘Because I sought it far from men …’ Just when Tarvin has nearly abandoned his search for the Naulahka, he sees it, just for a moment, worn by the Prince.
