Publication
This is one of the poems Kipling wrote for his father Lockwood’s Beast and Man in India (1891). It is the heading to Chapter xiii: “Of Animal Calls”.
The book was published in 1891. We do not have a firm date, but since the first edition includes an advertisement dated May 1891, we are currently listing it for that month in our tables of verse dates. [J.W.A.W]
